Greyhounds and Lurchers

Choosing any dog to be part of your family is a very big decision, no matter what breed. There are many Greyhound and Lurchers in centres rescues throughout the UK all looking for a caring home.

As with any dog if children are calm and sensible around them, greyhounds and lurchers can make fantastic pets and shouldn’t be a problem with families with small children.

If you do decide to welcome an ex-racer into your home remember that they will have spent most of their life in kennels and will require time and gentle encouragement to get used to a loving home environment. Take care when out with your new dog especially with smaller dogs and other animals that may remind them of their natural hunting drive. By providing toys to chase and play can help to channel their hunting urges away from the local wild

life.

The Greyhound is one of the oldest known breeds, dating back to an ancient Egyptian breed.

They were often owned by nobility. Now they are however mostly used for human amusement and gambling on race tracks across the world.

Sadly, many retired racers end up in rescue kennels waiting for a loving home. If you choose to welcome one of these dogs into your home you will be rewarded with a gentle, loyal and surprisingly lazy pet. Contrary to popular belief greyhounds and lurchers are often couch potatoes and like nothing more than a cosy up on a warm comfy bed.
